Abstract
The paper "Geographical Indications and Tourism: A Symbiotic Relationship for Sustainable Development" examines in detail the relationship between Geographical Indications and tourism, focusing on how they mutually contribute to sustainable development. This paper will examine how GIs reinforce tourism in terms of the promotion of specialty and region-specific products, then cultural and heritage tourism, and finally, local economic activities. Tourism, in turn, enhances the visibility and value of GI products and reinforces regional identity and economic benefits. The paper also explores this relationship across multiple dimensions, from economic and social impacts to environmental consequences, showing how GIs align with several United Nations SDGs: responsible consumption, supporting rural livelihoods, and conserving natural resources. Finally, the issues of counterfeit products, underdeveloped infrastructures, and legal complexities are discussed in light of policy recommendations to maximize the potential of GIs in tourism. It advocates for strategic stakeholders to collaborate, furthering sustainable tourism practices in ways to use GIs as an effective tool for economic growth while yielding cultural preservation.
